Thread, the basic material of carpet is made from wool, cotton and silk. The threads may either be used with their natural colours or may be dyed with vegetable dyes called madder.
These dyes are obtained from the leaves and roots of several plants. The colour of madder is bright and does not fade under sunlight. It is a further important reason for the value of old carpets.

There are three kinds of knots in carpet art;

TURKISH KNOT;

The thread is surrounded around the front and back woofs and the knots is made by pulling the ends of the thread out to the front side of the carpet. This technique, called the double knot, is appreciated for its soundness. But it is not convenient for the creation of delicate designs.

IRANIAN KNOT;
This knot is named Sine after the town of Sine in West Iran and the thread is only tied to one woof and is pulled out to the front of the carpet by turning around the other. This is weak but convenient for the formation of delicate designs.

SPANISH KNOT(HEKIM);
Tied on a single woof and turned around the woof once. Not useful in quality carpet making.

Carpets have been used in Turkey for hundreds of generations as an integral part of life. They are used as storage bags, floor coverings, bedding, tents and also praying.
Each carpet tells a story through the pattern and design. Inspiration comes from historic events or special occasions which have occurred during weaver’s lives.
